program:
In 2008 LaN has traveled afar– expanding our network and attempting to establish roots in our 3 locations–Barcelona, Boulder-Denver & Brooklyn. LaN believes being highly mobile is only truly valuable when we seek to diffuse our global gatherings through our locales. LaN is looking to bring critical dialogue + practice to Denver in the realm of digital design + fabrication and is privaledged to do so in collaboration with Sprocket Design-Build.
This first series seeks to bring a base understanding to all so that we may subsequently investigate intermediate-to-expert topics. Events in Denver on this subject will continue. Collaborating with Sprocket will privilege us to judge the success of our developments through feasibility into current practice. In 2009, LaN invites students and professionals alike to join our network, and engage in forwarding architectural practices in our locale.
>
This Denver 4 week series is to be understood as a fast-paced introduction to DIGITAL DESIGN + FABRICATION practices in architecture. The sessions will guide you through hands on digital modeling (RHINO), fabrication processes (CAM software), RHINO plug-ins, expose you to many recent digi-fab precedents, collaborative aspects, terminology (do you know what a ‘developable’ surface is ? generative vs. parametric? ), fabrication principles (how can production aspects drive your design), implications on Architecture, CNC equipment (overview & operations) and LaN related projects (IaaC, Interscalar Istanbul, Denver International Airport competition winning project, Montana State University, Visiting Scholar Studio, etc). The sessions will be further infused with dialogue from LaN spring events (New Mexico, Seattle, Los Angeles, Rome & Brooklyn).
>
Requests for advanced topics will have LaN consider running a second series concurrently.
*sessions will be led by LaN Co-Director, Monika Wittig (see bio)
*1 guest lecturer is currently planned, additional possibilities based on enrollment
*REGISTER by email den@livearchitecture.net please send background info
*PAYMENTS via paypal
*ALL SUN/WED sessions will take place in Denver @ Sprocket Design-Build.
*To further accommodate Boulder participants, LaN is considering holding THURS pm sessions in Boulder as an option to WED pm in Denver (based on enrollment numbers).

session 1 (Valentine’s version)
WHY YOU WILL LOVE PARAMETRIC PRACTICES IN ARCHITECTURE’
Experience how CNC processes are ENABLING designers. Far from the common misconception that computers are removing humanistic qualities– intuition, craft & the eye of the designer are engaged through digital design & fabrication allowing architectural processes to engage with the world of complexity, customization & collaboration.  Software tutorials will have you moving in Rhino and understanding how to model with an awareness of fabrication methods. Renew your appreciation for principles of geometry–learn what geometries can unroll, what is meant by ‘developable’, ‘ruled ‘surfaces, how to model ‘buildable’ surfaces. How can complex geometries be understood and fabricated?  Get to know projects from around the world displaying these basic principles.

b  FEB 18 WED or (tentative boulder) 19 THURS
session 2
REAL TIME DESIGN’
Can architecture be explored as a process which no longer strives for a product end, but rather as a living, parametrically-performing practice? Parametric practices are moving architecture on the micro-scale through dynamic modeling and more significantly on the macro-scale towards a dynamic architectural medium—a live practice. Understand the significance of parametric practices in projects with extended time frames (i.e. Sagrada Familia). LaN asks you to abandon representational modes of design and practice live. Practice what is meant by ‘iterative design’, ‘parametric’ & ‘generative’ processes. This session will introduce GRASSHOPPER, a parametric plug-in for RHINO.
a  FEB 22 SUN
b  FEB 25 WED or (tentative Boulder) 26 THURS
session 3
LAND-SCALE PARAMETRICS’
Expanding on themes from session 2, realize the potential of parametric practices on wider scale applications. Contrary to popular belief, differentiated design is not only feasible and relevant on the scale of products–custom furniture etc. In this session witness some unique examples of landscape-scale parametric applications. RHINO Terrain will be introduced.
a  MAR 1 SUN
b  MAR 4 or (tentative Boulder) 5 THURS
session 4
MACHINING OPERATIONS’
3axis, 5 or 7 axis CNC router…what really is the difference? What CNC machining options can architecture draw from. Robots? How can production processes drive design instead of being seen as the output in a linear process. This session intrigues with design via fabrication processes. Learn traditional and explorational operation of RHINOCAM. Further, session discuss who’s who and what’s what of digital design and fabrication and finishing with what’s on the horizon… what’s next?
a  MAR 8 SUN
b  MAR 11 WED  or (tentative Boulder) 5 THURS
session 5 (optional & additional expenses)
LaN-IN-FLIGHT (LAX tentative)
SEE FOR YOURSELF DIGI-DESIGN + FABRICATION IN-PRACTICE
SUN MAR 15- WED MAR 18
LaN is currently planning a digital fabrication trip in San Diego / LAX
