pre-shop week prior Foundations of Digital Fabrication & Rhino modeling
Advised readings will be distributed online covering critical realms of advanced geometry, parametric processes & digital collaboration.
An index of beginner Rhino techniques will be distributed to allow all new Rhino users key introductory modeling terms & techniques to begin the workshop on the appropriate level.

day 01 SAT OCT 1 | 10a – 1pm & 2p – 7/8p :
- Lecture: Introduction to Digital Fabrication 10-11:00a
- Instructional: Rhinoceros 3d modeling for Fabrication 11:00a-1p & 2-3p
- New to Rhino? Not for long. Learn the 3d modeling environment of Rhinoceros through a fabrication focus. Emphasizing commands and strategies relevant to machining complex geometries… let us frame your modeling thinking back to design, materiality, and advanced geometry. Participants will gain a geometrical understanding of surface types and how they can be analyzed, categorized, and most importantly…constructed.
- Lecture: subtractive fabrication technologies & strategies
- Instructional: Rhinoceros for production 3d-to-2d – subtractive fabrication techniques & Rhinonest plug-in
- Work/Lab session: 6-8p
//
day 02 SUN OCT 2 | 10a – 1pm & 2p – 7/8p :
- Lecture: Parametric Process Design 10-10:30a
- Instructional: Introduction to Grasshopper 10:30a-1p & 2-5pm
- The sessions today will introduce Grasshopper plug-in for Rhinoceros 4. Described as a ‘generative modeling for Rhino,’ Grasshopper is a parametric design environment suited for designing relationships versus explicit objects or forms. “While Grasshopper is considered a graphical algorithm editor, it requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but enables designers to generate and control complex forms.”
- Work/Lab session: 5-7pm
- Closing presentation: CUSTOM FABRICATION TECHNOLOGIES 7-8pm
- Lecture extends our vantage point of relevant CNC processes beyond the well-known laser-cutting / 3d printing / CNC milling as of late.
- Presentation includes interesting automated technology processes under development beyond our immediate architectural field.
