EXPRESS INTEREST IN NEXT LaN @ TORONTO EVENT >>

LaN @RYERSON DIGITAL FABRICATION WORKSHOP

AUG 22 – AUG 26  2011 (5 days fulltime)

INSTRUCTED BY LaN: Monika Wittig, Shane Salisbury & tba

  • *all skill levels–including no previous Rhino experience–are welcome
  • *workshop will utilize digital fabrication equipment available at Ryerson (3d printer / laser cutter)
  • *location: CAD Lab

pre-shop Week of AUG 15  Foundations of Digital Fabrication

Advised readings will be distributed online covering critical realms of advanced geometry, parametric processes & digital collaboration.

day 01    MON AUG 22 | 10a – 1pm & 2p – 5p : Introduction to Rhinoceros 4.0 for Fabrication

New to Rhino? Not for long. Learn the 3d modeling environment of Rhinoceros through a fabrication focus. Emphasizing commands and strategies relevant to machining complex geometries… let us frame your modeling thinking back to design, materiality, and advanced geometry. Participants will gain a geometrical understanding of surface types and how they can be analyzed, categorized, and most importantly…constructed.

day 02 TUES AUG 23 | 10a – 1pm & 2p – 6/7p:CAD to CAM  / Fabrication Technologies

RhinoCAM leads us on an exploration of CNC milling–3axis, 5 axis, 7 and on. LaN walks participants through machinery & processes, technical aspects of Rhinocam & of course the design to production feedback loop–machining aspects that drive your design from initial phases. Output is no longer an afterthought. Rhinocam exercises include 2, 2.5, & 3D surfacing operations. Simulations via RhinoCAM in Rhinoceros simulate machining operations as if we are beside the equipment itself.

Session continues with exciting perspective into the many digital fabrication technologies that are currently in existence / in development & being forwarded by open-source communities.

day 03 WED AUG 24 | 10a – 1pm & 2p – 5/6p : Introduction to Parametric Design via Grasshopper / Design Development (Grasshopper + Fabrication)

The sessions today will introduce Grasshopper plug-in for Rhinoceros 4.  Described as a ‘generative modeling for Rhino,’ Grasshopper is a parametric design environment suited for designing relationships versus explicit objects or forms. “While Grasshopper is considered a graphical algorithm editor, it requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but enables designers to generate and control complex forms.” Learn basic functionality of this vast interface. As we progress through the workshop we will look at ways to construct logics which take advantage of diverse data sources, algorithms, geometry, and manufacturing processes.

This session continues focusing on reinforcing the connection between design and fabrication through beginning to fabricate with Ryerson’s CNC MILL.

day 04  THUR AUG 25 | 10a – 1pm & 2p – 5/6p : Design Development (Grasshopper + Fabrication)

This session will continue to focus on the connection between design and fabrication, this time focusing on generating forms suitable for 3d printing directly from the Grasshopper interface.  Several techniques will be explored, each touching on key themes in file generation and preparation for rapid prototyping.

day 05  FRI AUG 26| 10a – 1pm & 2p – 5/6p : Digitally Fabricating / Workshop FINALE

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Lots of DIGITAL FABRICATION today…. today we will be in full production mode.

Workshop wraps-up with a presentation of finalized prototype and discussion of the weeks explorations.
