RHINO DIGITAL DESIGN MARCH SESSIONS – DENVER / BOULDER

SESSIONS HELD MONDAY (DENVER) AND TUESDAY (BOULDER) 6-900PM MARCH 14  – APRIL 19

  • *laptop needed
  • *if you care to rent a laptop email us
  • *all instructed software available for free trial downloads – registrants will receive links and direction how to install
  • *additional individual tutoring available online or in person
  • *all academic participants may elect to purchase a LaN sponsored Rhinoceros educational license for an additional $50.
  • *participants may have the option to make up a missed session during Denver sessions (tentatively held in parallel weekly)
  • 30% discount to all participants wishing to join LaN FLIGHT California traveling seminar over spring break March 19-26th.

This workshop is intended to suit a range of levels– those with no Rhino experience will gain a working understanding of the program and a vast overview of its compatibility and potential to design in parallel with CNC technologies. Those with some prior RHINO experience will be able to take their understanding far beyond basics of modeling to precision modeling, integration with CAM, parametric realms, real world examples, & output to 3dprinting / CNC milling. All will realize how to instrumentally drive design intentions via congruence with machining processes.

5 sessions – $295. BOULDER or DENVER (please specify desired location in paypal notes… you may attend a combination of both cities if needed)

Session 1 MON MARCH 14 (Denver)  /  TUE MARCH 15  (Boulder) 6-900p

  • LECTURE 6-7p : ARCHITECTURAL RESPONSE: Prototyping the Practice of Live Architecture
  • INSTRUCTIONAL 715-930: INTRODUCTION TO RHINOCEROS 3d MODELING
  • Learn the 3d nurbs modeling environment of Rhinoceros 4.0/5.0 as well as why LaN chooses to utilize this platform which has become surrounded by a large open-source community and ever-growing list of plug-ins to supplement Rhino basic functionality.

*no classes CU SPR BRK WEEK March 20-27  LaN will be on LaN FLIGHT in California… care to join us?  http://livearchitecture.net/lanflight

Session 2 MON MARCH 28 (Denver) / TUE MARCH 29  (Boulder) 6-900p

  • INSTRUCTIONAL : RHINO FOR FABRICATION
  • Continue to learn the modeling environment of Rhinoceros through a fabrication focus. Emphasizing commands and strategies relevant to machining complex geometries… let us frame your modeling thinking back to design, materiality, and advanced geometry. Participants will gain a geometrical understanding of surface types and how they can be analyzed, categorized, and most importantly…constructed.
  • Working between 3D geometry and 2D fabrication, session continues with use of Rhino plug-in RhinoNEST. Also instructed will be the use of scripts for the non-scripter. You may not generate scripts yet on your own, but there’s no reason not to make use of the vast opensource platform that Rhino has become. Learn how to engage with the community and make the tools work for you.

Session 3 MON APRIL 4 (Denver) / TUE APRIL 5 (Boulder) 6-900p

  • LECTURE 6-7p : DESIGN DEVELOPMENT VIA PRODUCTION PARAMETERS
  • INSTRUCTIONAL 715-930: RHINOCAM
  • RhinoCAM leads us on an exploration of CNC milling–3axis, 5 axis, 7 and on. LaN walks participants through machinery & processes, technical aspects of Rhinocam & of course the design to production feedback loop–machining aspects that drive your design from initial phases. Output is no longer an afterthought. Rhinocam exercises include 2, 2.5, & 3D surfacing operations. Simulations via RhinoCAM in Rhinoceros simulate machining operations as if we are beside the equipment itself.

Session 4 MON APRIL 11 (Denver) / TUE APRIL 12 (Boulder) 6-900p

  • INSTRUCTIONAL: MICRO-TO-MACRO FABRICATION
  • From the intriguing aspects of 3d printing to wider scale implications & practices of parametric processes session begins by exploring when 3d printing is instrumental to a design process. Participants will learn most valuable Rhinoceros tools for 3d printing.
  • Think 3d printing concepts apply to modeling realms only? You will be amazed by current developments on the building scale. Session continues to explore how such tools & technology are driving design process changes. Continuing in increasing scales, exercises utilizing RhinoTERRAIN will have us working on the landscape scale in Rhino.

Session 5 MON APRIL 18 (Denver) / TUE APRIL 19 (Boulder) 6-900p

  • INSTRUCTIONAL 6-9p : GRASSHOPPER – PARAMETRIC MODELING
  • Grasshopper is considered a graphical algorithm editor and requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but enables designers to generate and control complex forms. Session gives participants an introductory use of this vast interface.
  • for more information see: http://grasshopper3d.com
  • 9-930p: FABulous farewell
  • Closing session for questions & discussion amidst a final fireworks show of projects of relevance to digital design and fabrication. In hoping participants continue their development LaN will further point all in the direction of our favorite online resources, publications, plug-ins, etc…
