Project Architect: Quim Girbau & Neus Mateu
Design Consultation and Fabrication: Medio Design
Parametric Design and Geometry Consultation: Luis E. Fraguada – LaN
This project for the design the UDON Chueca restaurant in Madrid was recently completed by Arquitects Quim Girbau & Neus Mateu. Medio Design and LaN collaborated on the ceiling which traverses the span of the restaurant. The ceiling, which is cut from Alucobond, was an experiment in form and optimization. The original design based on a freeform surface called for about 30% material waste. By constraining the overall geometry and implementing simple trigonometric functions, we were able to reduce material waste to 5% overall as well as dramatically decrease production time.
The optimization of the project was inspired by Andrew Kudless’ Zero/Fold Screen. In this project Andrew departs from the material dimensions and devises a strategy to reduce the material waste generated in the digital fabrication process to nearly zero.
