3 day workshop on LIVE aspects of digital design & fabrication for architecture

Its clear in 2010 perhaps more than ever that significant shifts in economies and culture can occur extremely rapidly; climatic crisis can devastate enormous populations in seconds. Our architectural response is critical. The architectural recourse of one crisis needs to be more than a temporary fix as it is often the only opportunity to implement further preventative measures for a future occurrence. This workshop exposes digitally-driven technologies aiding the architectural realm in developing design intentions in accordance with environmental, material & production parameters. Workshop explores how to implement TODAY the utilization of advancing technologies whether a student or design professional. Parametric approaches are not limited to the software one uses but more importantly a shift in thinking of multi-phase aspects of an architectural project.   • INSTRUCTIONAL : INTRODUCTION TO RHINOCEROS 3d MODELING
  • Learn the 3d modeling environment of Rhinoceros 4.0/5.0 as well as why LaN chooses to utilize this platform which has become surrounded by a large open-source community and ever-growing list of plug-ins to supplement Rhino basic functionality.
  • INSTRUCTIONAL : RHINO FOR FABRICATION
  • Learn the 3d modeling environment of Rhinoceros through a fabrication focus. Emphasizing commands and strategies relevant to machining complex geometries… let us frame your modeling thinking back to design, materiality, and advanced geometry. Participants will gain a geometrical understanding of surface types and how they can be analyzed, categorized, and most importantly…constructed.

  • LECTURE : FABRICATION TECHNOLOGIES
  • INSTRUCTIONAL: RHINOCAM
  • RhinoCAM leads us on an exploration of CNC milling–3axis, 5 axis, 7 and on. LaN walks participants through machinery & processes, technical aspects of Rhinocam & of course the design to production feedback loop–machining aspects that drive your design from initial phases. Output is no longer an afterthought. Rhinocam exercises include 2, 2.5, & 3D surfacing operations. Simulations via RhinoCAM in Rhinoceros simulate machining operations as if we are beside the equipment itself.
  • INSTRUCTIONAL: DESIGN DEVELOPMENT IN RHINO
  • Working between 3D geometry and 2D fabrication, session continues with use of Rhino plug-in RhinoNEST. Also instructed will be the use of scripts for the non-scripter. You may not generate scripts yet on your own, but there’s no reason not to make use of the vast opensource platform that Rhino has become. Learn how to engage with the community and make the tools work for you.

  • Grasshopper is considered a graphical algorithm editor and requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but enables designers to generate and control complex forms. Session gives an introductory experience of this vast interface.

  • No previous experience of modeling in Rhinoceros is necessary
