THE DIGITAL / PHYSICAL SURFACE
Tuesday November 24 1pm-6pm

Lecture:  Rationalizing Complex Surfaces We will begin the workshop with a geometrical overview of different surface types and how they can be analyzed, categorized, and most importantly…constructed.

Project:  Digitize a physical 3-d Surface by means of reverse engineering with a 3-d digitizing tool produced by Boulder Innovation Group.  The system is  “used for precise, free-hand, real-time localization of a point in three dimensional (3D) space. In the Industrial field, these products are valuable measurement systems and image capture used by engineers, designers and manufacturing/ quality workers for reverse engineering, inspection of complex parts and process control.” –BIG Boulder Innovation Group

We will utilize BIG’s technology to digitize 3-d objects in order to import them into Rhino.

3D DIGITIZE A CLIMBING ROUTE
Wednesday November 25

Lecture: Climbing a Complex Geometry
A lecture by a local professional  climber will explain the spatial experience of a vertical climbing route.  We will discus the architectural and geometrical ideas that we can extract from this information.

Project:  We will meet at a Boulder outdoor climbing location and attempt to digitize a particular route.  Our goal is to digitally scan a natural route in order to bring it into the computer & digitally construct an approximated faceted surface– a corresponding indoor wall design.

3D DIGITIZE A CLIMBING ROUTE
Friday November 27
1pm-6pm

Question Session:  ASK LaN
The first 2 hours of the Friday session will be open to participant questions and “how to” explanations that relate to academic/pro projects.  Bring in your project, we will direct your further!

Lecture: Surface Components / Panels
Here we will discuss surface resolution, rationalizing surfaces by means of panelization, materials / methods.

Rhino / Grasshopper Training: Parametric Panels
We will teach Rhino Panel Tools and Grasshopper paneling techniques.  Ultimately participants will know various methods of dividing a complex surface and producing panels or components.

Project:  THE CLIMBING WALL
We will spend the majority of the remaining workshop developing a parametric climbing wall.  We will produce a parametric wall that can be digitally adapted.  With this in mind, we will develop a climbing surface that could be retrofit onto existing structures or buildings.  We will use the data from the Digitally Scanned climbing route in an attempt to reproduce the physical route in our digital model.

Rhino / Grasshopper Training: Grasshopper plug-ins…Ecotect, Excel, and external devices
We will further your knowledge of Grasshopper in order to explore data use from external applications such as ecotect, excel, and even an i-pod touch. This will carry with the workshop theme of inputting and outputting data from external sources and reinforce the physical to digital / digital to physical processes we are teaching.

Project:  THE CLIMBING WALL WORK SESSION
We will team up to produce variations and possibilities of our climbing wall using Rhino.  Workshop tutors will work amongst participants answering questions and distributing knowledge.  We will produce a digital presentation of our workshop findings in order to present to a panel of critics.

We will present our work to local critics and area professionals.  Our goal will be to work as a team to promote future projects based upon our research. We will end  Saturday with drinks and a fiesta to celebrate our success!
